How to Choose the Right Livestock Trailer for Your Texas Ranch

Choosing the right livestock trailer is one of the most important equipment decisions a Texas rancher
makes. The wrong trailer puts your animals at risk, costs you money in vet bills, and makes every
hauling day harder than it needs to be. At Trailer Place

Step 1: What Animals Are You Hauling?

Cattle

Cattle are heavy and can be aggressive when stressed. You need heavy-duty floors (minimum 12-gauge steel
with rubber mats), strong slam-latch gates, and solid sidewalls. Allow 15-20 square feet per head for
mature cattle. A 16’x6′ stock trailer (96 sq ft) comfortably hauls 5-6 head. For larger herds,
20′-24′ gooseneck models handle 10-12 head.

Horses

Horses need more individual space and safety features than cattle. Padded dividers, smooth interior walls
(no protruding bolts or edges), proper ventilation, and rubber-matted floors are essential. A standard
horse stall is 5′ wide. Bumper pull 2-horse trailers work for occasional hauling; gooseneck 3-4 horse
trailers are better for regular transport.

Goats, Sheep & Small Livestock

Smaller livestock need appropriate partition spacing — too wide and animals can get their heads stuck.
Look for trailers with adjustable partitions or small-livestock-specific gate configurations.
Smaller bumper pull stock trailers (12′-16′) work well for goat and sheep operations.

Step 2: Bumper Pull or Gooseneck?

For livestock trailers under 16′ carrying fewer than 6 head of cattle, bumper pull is fine.
For larger trailers (16’+) or regular hauling of heavy livestock, gooseneck is strongly recommended.
The weight distribution over the rear axle is critical when hauling live animals that shift and move
during transport — gooseneck hitching provides significantly more stability.

Step 4: Rust Protection Matters in Texas

Southeast Texas humidity is brutal on steel trailers. Livestock trailers get even more exposure to
corrosive elements — manure, urine, and mud accelerate rust significantly. Your options:

• Galvanized steel — The gold standard for rust resistance. Hot-dip galvanizing coats every surface including joints and hidden areas. Costs more upfront but lasts 20+ years.
• Powder-coated steel — Good protection when new, but chips and scratches allow rust to start. Needs touch-up maintenance, especially in high-wear areas.
• Aluminum — Zero rust, ever. Lightest weight option. Most expensive upfront but zero maintenance.

For Gulf Coast ranching, we strongly recommend galvanized or aluminum construction.
Standard painted steel trailers in our climate typically show significant rust within 3-5 years.

Step 5: Size & Configuration Guide

• 12′ bumper pull — 3-4 head of cattle, small goat/sheep operations
• 16′ bumper pull — 5-6 head of cattle, the most popular ranch size
• 16′ gooseneck — 5-6 head with better stability for highway hauling
• 20′ gooseneck — 8-10 head, mid-size operations
• 24′ gooseneck — 10-12 head, large operations and auction hauling
