Texas summers punish trailers. Asphalt can pass 150 degrees, tires flex constantly and grease thins out. At Trailer Place in Wharton we see the same heat-related failures every year, and almost all of them are preventable with a little prep.

Tires Are the First Thing to Fail

Heat raises tire pressure and weakens sidewalls. Check pressure cold, before you roll, and set it to the number on the sidewall or trailer label. Look for cracking, bulges and tires older than about five years. Our tire pressure and spare guide covers the details.

Bearings and Brakes Run Hotter

Mind Your Load and Weight

A trailer near its limit makes everything run hotter. Know your numbers with our GVWR and tongue weight explainer, and keep cargo secure to avoid trailer sway.

Protect the Tow Vehicle Too

  • Watch the transmission and coolant temperature gauges on long grades.
  • Leave extra following distance, because heavy trailers need more room to stop.
  • Stop every hour or two in shade to check tires, hubs and straps.

Heat Tips for Cargo and Equipment

Enclosed trailers can hit oven temperatures. Do not leave paint, aerosols, batteries or food inside, and consider vents or insulation. For open trailers, check that straps have not loosened as wood decking and cargo expand, and read our tie-down guide.

Park Smart

Shade, a level surface and a covered trailer all slow wear. For longer breaks see our long-term storage guide. Browse utility trailers, enclosed trailers and dump trailers built to take Texas work.
