Most trailer breakdowns and roadside accidents start with something a two-minute walk-around would have caught. Whether you pull a weekend utility trailer or a loaded gooseneck, run this checklist every time you hook up. It is the routine we recommend to customers at Trailer Place in Wharton, TX.

The 10-Point Walk-Around

  • Coupler and ball: ball size matches the coupler, latch is closed, and the pin or lock is in place. Tug up on the tongue to confirm it is seated.
  • Safety chains: crossed under the tongue, with enough slack to turn but not drag. Details are in our safety chains and coupler guide.
  • Breakaway cable: clipped to the truck, not the hitch ball, and the battery is charged.
  • Lights: have a helper check running lights, brake lights and turn signals. If something is dark, see our wiring troubleshooting guide.
  • Tires: cold pressure at the sidewall rating, no cracks, bulges or uneven wear, and a usable spare.
  • Lug nuts: snug and torqued to spec, especially after new wheels or a long trip.
  • Hubs and bearings: warm is normal after a drive, hot is not. Check on your first stop.
  • Brakes: test the controller before you leave the driveway.
  • Jack, ramps and gate: raised, latched and pinned so nothing swings loose.
  • Load: centered, roughly 10 to 15 percent of weight on the tongue, and strapped down.

Check the Numbers Too

A visual check does not tell you if you are overloaded. Compare the loaded weight to the trailer GVWR and your truck rating using our GVWR and tongue weight guide. Overloaded axles are a leading cause of tire blowouts on Texas highways in summer heat.

Make It a Habit

Check again after the first few miles, then at every fuel stop. Loads settle, straps loosen and tires heat up. For longer-term care, follow the trailer maintenance checklist and the wheel bearing guide.
