Few things scare a driver like a trailer that starts to fishtail at highway speed. On windy Gulf Coast roads and busy I-10 traffic, sway can turn a routine haul into an accident in seconds. The good news: nearly every sway problem comes down to a few fixable causes. Here is what we tell customers at Trailer Place in Wharton, TX.
What Causes Trailer Sway
- Low tongue weight. Aim for 10 to 15 percent of total trailer weight on the hitch. Less than that and the tail wags the truck. Our GVWR, payload and tongue weight guide shows how to measure it.
- Load placed too far back. Keep heavy items just ahead of the axles and centered side to side.
- Overloading. Going past GVWR overwhelms the tires, axles and your truck.
- Underinflated or worn tires. Check pressure before every trip.
- Speed and wind. Passing semis and crosswinds push light trailers around.
- Wrong hitch height. A trailer that is not level shifts weight off the tongue.
How to Prevent It
Load heavy cargo low and forward, keep the trailer level, and stay at or below 65 mph when loaded. A properly working brake system matters too, so see our brake controller guide. For heavier loads, a weight distribution hitch with built-in sway control ($300 to $900) adds stability. Tandem axles also track straighter than a single axle, as we explain in single vs tandem axle trailers.
Tie Down Your Load Correctly
A shifting load causes sway too. Use ratchet straps or chains rated for the cargo, not the strap’s break strength: the combined working load limit should be at least half the cargo weight. Use at least two tie-downs per item, add a third on long loads, and cross the straps on front and rear. Re-check after the first 10 miles, since loads settle. Protect strap edges from sharp corners, and keep equipment chained at four points on equipment haulers.
If Sway Starts
Do not slam the brakes or jerk the wheel. Ease off the gas, hold the wheel straight, and apply the trailer brakes manually with your controller. Slow down gradually and pull over to find the cause.
