Straps, chains, jacks and tools end up rolling around the bed if you do not give them a home. A good tool box keeps gear dry, organized and out of sight. Here are the main onboard storage options for utility, flatbed, dump and equipment trailers.
Tongue boxes
A tongue box mounts on the A-frame ahead of the deck. It is the most popular choice on gooseneck and bumper pull flatbeds. Steel and aluminum boxes are common, and many have a locking latch and a drain hole.
- Best for straps, binders, chains and a small tool kit.
- Keep weight in mind, because heavy items add tongue weight.
- Check that the lid clears your truck bed and tow vehicle on tight turns.
Deck and side-mount boxes
Low-profile boxes sit on the deck or bolt to the side rail. They hold more but use deck space, so measure your usual cargo first. Side-mount boxes keep the deck clear for loading.
Under-deck and in-trailer storage
- Under-bed boxes: use dead space between the frame rails.
- Rack and cabinet systems: popular inside enclosed trailers for contractors.
- Ramp and rail holders: store binders and boards without a box.
Material and security
- Aluminum resists rust and keeps weight down.
- Powder-coated steel is tougher but needs touch-ups.
- Use a quality padlock, and bolt or weld the box so it cannot be lifted off.
- Seal seams and add a desiccant pack if you store tools through humid Gulf Coast summers.
Packing tips
- Keep heavy items low and near the axles.
- Strap loose gear so it cannot shift.
- Never exceed GVWR with gear plus cargo.
